New HostASite.com Instance – Ourea

We are proud to announce our new shared hosting server for HostASite.com customers. This new instance, ourea, is going to replace our aging demeter server. This new instance is part of our cloud agnostic initiative, and are using Linode to host this instance. The instance is hosted within their Texas location.
In reality using VPS technology is nothing new to us. We’ve been doing this for years with our existing shared hosting servers and with our managed VPS customers (HostCube). Many of our existing “servers” are in reality VPS instances within our cloud. Using VPS technology allows us to better manage our resources. So this is using the same technologies as previous, but we can now deploy instances with various other cloud providers.
Not only is this instance using cloud technology, but we’ve replaced Apache with the fast Litespeed web server. Litespeed offers much better performance than apache, yet also allow for the secure permissions needed with programming languages like PHP. It’s a direct replacement of Apache, down to reading it’s configuration files, and should be a seamless transfer. The only exception is with SuPHP options. Since with LiteSpeed PHP is running as mod_php these options will have to change back. We will assist in these changes when switching over your site.
For customers on demeter, keep in mind PHP 4 is no longer supported, and the same applies to MySQL 4. So do make sure your applications can run with PHP 5 and MySQL 5. We will be contacting customers individually about moving your site, and can discuss any special requirements you may have before moving your account. We can install PHP 4, if needed, but prefer this as a last resort. MySQL 4 will not be available.
